For June 28, 2020, our used car find is this 64k mile 1999 BMW Z3 Coupe 2.8, which is listed on craigslist by a private seller in the Denver area for $15,900.
Here’s what makes this car special.
Introduced in 1998 (as a 1999 model), the Z3 Coupe was a shooting brake version of BMW’s popular Z3 Roadster. Its distinctive shape, while somewhat polarizing initially, has over time been embraced by most enthusiasts, who endearingly refer to it as the “clown shoe.”
The M variant of the car has become a collector’s item in the last few years, with nice examples fetching as much as $50,000. One museum-quality specimen with just 4k miles sold for nearly a hundred grand on Bring a Trailer last year.
That kind of price tag puts an M Coupe out of reach for most buyers. But the “base” version here is still an excellent performer. With a must-have manual gearbox paired with the 190 hp M52 straight six under the hood, it’s capable of 0-60 runs in well under seven seconds. Road & Track notes also that its fixed roof helps to stiffen up the structure for better overall handling than the Roadster. Plus, it’s somewhat rare, with Roadsters outselling Coupes by a ratio of almost five to one.
The Coupe’s private seller reports that the all-original car has been garaged throughout its life and maintained during his ownership (the last nine years) at a local German car specialist. The bodywork and interior both appear to be in outstanding shape, with the seller noting only a small spot of clear coat fading on the hood as well as a quarter inch imperfection in the front bumper.
The asking price of $15,900 is quite reasonable for a clean, low-mile example of the Z3 Coupe. We expect this one wont last long.
