For July 5, 2020, our used car find is this 53k mile 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1, which is listed on craigslist by a private seller in Longmont, Colorado, for $14,000.
Here’s what makes this car special.
In 2003, Ford resurrected the Mach 1 name from the iconic Mustang variant that originally appeared in 1969, borrowing several styling cues, including a functional “Shaker” hood scoop, 17-inch “Heritage” wheels, and on the inside, “comfortweave” leather seats and an aluminum ball shifter.
The changes weren’t just cosmetic. The Mach 1 also borrowed the Cobra’s 32-valve DOHC V8, here putting out 305 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque through a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox and a 3.55 performance differential. And it sports several chassis upgrades over the standard GT setup, including additional bracing, stiffer springs and shocks, and Brembo brakes.
This example looks great in classic Oxford White paint, and it appears to be one of the nicer ones out there, with relatively few miles as well as some interesting mods, like Bullitt wheels and a wider-than-stock hood stripe, giving it an even more retro look. Plus it undoubtedly sounds great with its upgraded SLP cat-back exhaust.
The asking price here of $14,000 (OBO) may sound a touch high for a Mustang from this era, but it’s in line with Hagerty’s estimate for a Mach 1 in #3 (“Good”) condition.
These cars are somewhat rare, with only about 15,000 produced during the two-year run, so they aren’t likely to depreciate any further — and may in fact increase in value, if preserved.
