2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Sedan with 66k Miles
Contents
For January 18, 2022, our used car find is this unusually nice 2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG sedan with just 66k miles. It’s offered on Craigslist by a private seller in the Eugene Oregon area for $25,000 or best offer.
Here’s what makes this one special.
Introduction
In case you haven’t noticed, cars are producing more power than ever. In fact, there’s been an escalating arms race among automakers, which has led to some insane products, such as the 808-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the 1020-horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid. That kind of output was almost unimaginable 20 years ago.
If you could trace these horsepower wars back to one car, it would likely be the 2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. This wasn’t the first AMG sedan from Mercedes, but with a 469-hp supercharged V8 under the hood churning out 516 lb-ft of torque, it was by far the most powerful. It was also the fastest production sedan in the world at the time, eclipsing the mighty E39-generation BMW M5 as well as the even mightier C5-generation Audi RS 6. “For the guy who wants the fastest four-door on the block, the Benz simply can’t be beat, for any money,” noted Car and Driver at the time.
Fast forward to today, and one of these elegant Mercedes missiles, which once stickered for nearly eighty grand, can be yours for over 70 percent off, thanks to the magic of depreciation. The trouble is finding one that hasn’t been abused, modified, or driven into the ground.
The Listing
That’s why we were pleasantly surprised to see this wonderfully clean and original example pop up on Craigslist recently. Offered by its longtime Pacific Northwest owner, it sports just 66k miles and, aside from some minor blemishes, such as a bit of curb rash on the wheels, it looks like it still belongs on the showroom floor.
In the words of the seller…
Up for sale is my 2003 Mercedes E55 AMG. It is in excellent condition and has been very well maintained. It is fully loaded and comes with push button start, keyless entry, heat/ventilated seats, Harmon Kardon speakers, rear sunshade, Alcantara headliner and phone integration. I just replaced the tires and they have less than 500 miles on them. It has a clean/clear title and is fully stock. I’ve owned this car for quite some time and I am only selling it because I just bought another car.

As we note in our related buyer’s guide, the W211-generation E Class is a complex vehicle, with sophisticated mechanicals such as an air suspension that can be costly to repair. So it’s important to have any MB from this era checked out by a specialist prior to making a purchase.
But assuming this one checks out, we think it’s an awfully good value. E55 examples from the prior W210 generation (1999-2002) have started to attract collector attention, so it’s only a matter of time until its powerful successor starts to rise in value, too. And once it does, buyers will be looking for clean, low-mileage examples exactly like this one.
