AW11 Generation Toyota MR2 5-Speed with 108k Miles

1989 Toyota MR2 exterior driver side

For August 7, 2021, our used car find is this 1989 Toyota MR2 with 108k miles and a 5-speed manual gearbox. It’s offered on Craigslist by a private seller in the Denver area for $10,995 or best offer.

Here’s what makes this one special.

The Listing

Toyota launched the MR2 — its “Midship Runabout 2-seater” — in 1984 (as a 1985 model). Sporting a distinctive wedge shape, a mid-engine layout, and the revvy twin-cam inline four (4A-GE) from the celebrated AE86-generation Corolla, the “Mister Two” delighted automotive journalists and the buying public alike. Car and Driver named it to its 10Best list twice, and Toyota sold almost 100,000 units through 1989, the final year for the AW11 generation.

This particular example is one of the nicest we’ve seen in a while, with relatively low miles and a super clean appearance inside and out. As a final-year AW11 generation car, it also enjoys all of the improvements Toyota made to the model through the years, including a slight increase in power, suspension revisions, larger brakes, and a T-bar roof.

And just look how well-preserved that original interior is!

In the words of the seller…

****1989 Toyota MR2 mid-mounted 1.6-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transaxle******

In great condition, this beautiful MR2 has been garaged (and covered) most of it’s lifespan, low mileage and extremely well maintained.

It comes with all the originals, key, manual, pinstriping, paint, interior etc…. If you’re looking for a classic, fun car that’s been well taken care of this is it! Clean title, car fax and has current emission within the past 60 days.

The exterior is finished in Super Red and features a fiberglass engine lid with raised louvers, a T-bar roof with removable glass panels, a front lip spoiler, and MR2-branded mud flaps. The retractable headlights are shown both raised and lowered in photos.

Ground Effects/Lower Spoilers, Rear Spoiler, Leather Steering wheel trim, Center Console, Steering Wheel – Tilt, Power Brakes, Clock, Radio – Am/Fm, Trip Odometer, Tinted Glass, Window Defogger – Front Wipers – Intermittent, Side Mirror Adjustments – Power, Front Seat Type – Bucket, Upholstery – Cloth

The only thing missing here is a supercharger (it was available on the AW11 starting in 1987). But these naturally-aspirated MR2s are still tons of fun, especially with the excellent 5-speed manual gearbox, which allows you to take full advantage of the 4A-GE engine’s 7500-rpm redline.

This one may seem pricey at nearly eleven grand, but according to Hagerty the market for nice MR2s has been on the rise lately. Still, they say, “If you find one of these baby Ferraris that’s been pampered like an actual Ferrari, snatch it up. You and your wallet probably won’t regret it.”

We couldn’t agree more.
