Blue on Blue 2004 Mercedes E500 Wagon with 98k Miles
Contents
For August 1, 2021, our used car find is this 2004 Mercedes-Benz E500 4matic wagon with 98k miles. It’s offered on Craigslist by a private seller in the Portland area for $7800 or best offer.
Here’s what makes this one special.
Introduction
Mercedes introduced its third generation E-Class (W211) to the US for the 2003 model year. It was sleeker and better looking than the outgoing version (W210), and it also offered a 5.0-liter version of Benz’s excellent M113 V8 for the first time. That brought back the famous E500 badge, previously seen on the legendary 1992-94 500E/E500, a joint venture between Mercedes and Porsche that instantly became a modern classic.
The new E500 wasn’t really meant to challenge its predecessor’s Q ship legacy, though. It still made great power — 302 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque — but was setup more for relaxed and luxurious cruising than for spirited driving, with cushy air springs and top-level interior trimmings. In its road test at the time, Car and Driver called the E500 “effortlessly powerful, extremely capable, stylish, elegant, and eminently practical.”
The Listing
This example is about everything you’d want to find in a used E500. First of all, it’s a wagon. Short of an AMG model, it’s the only V8 wagon Mercedes ever brought to the US. It also sports a rare color combination: Platinum Blue paint on Pacific Blue leather. We’ve not seen another one like it. And it doesn’t end there. The original owner seems to have ticked most of the boxes when filling out the order sheet. It even has Benz’s dynamic-drive multi-contour front seats, which are not only heated and ventilated but also provide active side-bolster bracing in corners.
This E500 wagon also sports low miles, just two prior owners, and a full service history, much of it at the dealership.
In the words of the seller…
E500 Sport Wagon V8 all wheel drive. 2nd owner with only 98,000 mi. Rare build with all the extras. Great condition and well cared for. Comes with extra set of wheels and tires. Recent brakes, tune and batteries. Never seen a body shop. Original owner maintained at a dealership. Service records available.
There’s not much to nitpick with this listing. Even the price seems quite reasonable. But since this is a top-of-the-line E-Class with some fairly complex options, like its Airmatic suspension, we’d highly recommend getting it inspected by a Mercedes specialist prior to finalizing a deal.
Assuming there aren’t any hidden or deferred issues, it’s a bargain at $7800.
