2006 Mercedes-Benz S350 with 89k Miles

For August 25, 2020, our used car find is this 2006 Mercedes-Benz S350 with 89k miles. It’s listed for sale on craigslist in the Ft. Myers area for $8500.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

Introduced in 2000 (in the US), the sleek W220 generation S-Class was a big departure from its old-school predecessor, the boxy W140 generation that defined the 1990s.

This new S Class was lighter, sleeker, and more efficient. In its first drive, MotorTrend called it “a package that — wonder of wonders — is slightly smaller on the outside, slightly larger on the inside, and powered by a family of incredibly clean yet remarkably fuel-efficient engines.”

The years since its debut, however, have been less kind to the W220. In fact, YouTuber Doug Demuro recently named it his least favorite S Class of all time, calling it “one of the worst redesigns in automotive history.”

We respectfully disagree. In fact, we prefer its low-key looks to the overdone styling on all S-Class designs that have followed. But we will concede that this generation of the big Benz wasn’t perfect. It introduced a host of new technologies, including complex electronics and a new 7-speed automatic, that plagued some owners with breakdowns and costly fixes, even when these cars were new.

That’s where the rare S350 version comes in. The one-year-only trim was introduced (in the US) for the final year of the W220 generation, largely to combat the early reliability issues. By sticking with a simple, proven powertrain — Benz’s M112 V6 mated to the 722.6 5-speed automatic — and eliminating many of the complexities of more expensive trims, the S350 delivered the S Class goods, like a sublimely quiet interior and smooth ride, while minimizing the problem areas.

It’s also the only W220 to come to the US in “short” wheelbase form — 5 inches shorter than the “long” wheelbase versions — which to our eye improves the overall proportions and should also make the chassis a bit livelier on the road.

The Listing

This nicely-kept example looks like most everything you’d want to find in a used S350, with relatively low miles, an accident-free history, a clean and original appearance inside and out, plus documented dealer servicing throughout its life.

It’s offered on craigslist by a private seller in the Ft. Myers area of Florida for $8500, which is a fair price assuming there are no hidden needs.

Anyone in the market for an understated highway cruiser that can go the distance should give this one a serious look.
