1994 Honda Civic EX Coupe with 5-Speed Manual
For October 6, 2020, our used car find is this time-capsule 1994 Honda Civic EX coupe which looks like new inside and out despite 117k miles on the odometer. It’s listed for sale on craigslist by a private seller in the Portland area for $8750.
Here’s what makes this one special.
The fifth generation Honda Civic debuted in the US for the 1992 model year. It was larger, more powerful, and more aerodynamic than the prior generation and widely praised as the best small car on the market.
Car and Driver took an Si hatchback for spin back then and declared, “Tight, smooth, clever, rewarding to drive, and cheap to run, the sporty Si hatchback hangs on to its leadership role among high-spirited economy cars.”
One year later, the coupe variant appeared (codename EJ1), offering not only a sleek, elegant shape (said to have been inspired by the BMW 3 Series) but also the same 125 hp VTEC engine as the Si, making it something of a sleeper among practical, compact cars.
MotorWeek’s John Davis offered heaps of praise for the sporty coupe in this video review:
This particular example is remarkably well preserved — not just for a nearly 30 year old car, but also for one with 117k miles under its belt(s). Boasting an accident-free, two-owner history, it has clearly enjoyed a pampered life in the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest. The original Frost White paint still gleams, while the grey cloth interior shows hardly a blemish.
Even though the EX coupe shares its powertrain with the Si trim, it’s not exactly a powerhouse. The 1.6 liter VTEC engine manages 125 hp and 106 lb-ft of torque. Channelled through Honda’s 5-speed manual gearbox to the front wheels, it gets the 2200 lb car to 60 mph in about 9 seconds. That’s not going to win many drag races, but it should still be plenty entertaining to drive.
The seller reports that everything on this car is in good, working condition, and that it comes with a lifetime of service records, including most recently an oil change at the local dealer, as well as a major visit in 2019 that involved a transmission rebuild, a new clutch, and also a new exhaust (among other things).
The asking price here of $8750 is top dollar for an old Civic. But we think the remarkable condition and great spec of this one warrants an exceptional price.
