2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 with 65k Miles

2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG exterior rear

For July 20, 2021, our used car find is this 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK55 AMG with just 65k miles. It’s offered on Craigslist by a private seller in the Bay Area for $12,800 or best offer.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

Mercedes-Benz introduced the CLK for the 1998 model year (in the US) as a compact luxury coupe competing with the BMW 3 Series and the Volvo C70, among others. The CLK offered a handsome shape, exceptional build quality, and refined performance. But it couldn’t quite match the 3 Series in terms of driving excitement.

That is, until AMG stepped in. For the 2001 model year, AMG got their hands on the CLK and made numerous tweaks, including a beefier suspension, bigger brakes and wheels, AMG badges and bodywork, and last but definitely not least: a stroked version of Benz’s reliable M113 V8 putting out a whopping 342 horsepower. The result was a brawny M3 fighter that originally sold for almost seventy grand.

The Listing

This example from 2002 (the penultimate year for the W208 generation) is one of the cleaner ones we’ve seen in a while. With a relatively low 65k miles, a good maintenance history, and reportedly no accident in its past, it’s exactly the kind of specimen you hope to find.

In the words of the seller…

Low mileage 2002 Mercedes CLK55 AMG with 65,000 miles on it.
5.5L V8, Sunroof, leather seats, power windows and doors, cold Ac, automatic transmission.
Always maintain on time. Tires and breaks are good. Inside is clean.
Passed smog inspection and clean title in hand. Never involved any accident.

The price is $12,800. low offers will be ignored. Let me know if you are interested.

Our only critique would be the slight haziness apparent in the headlights and fog lights, a common ailment for Benzes of this era and a sign that the car has been parked outside somewhat regularly. This could likely be addressed with a simple polish of the plastic lenses, however.

CLKs in general have been overlooked in the used car world, and that means prices are pretty low. The $12,800 ask here is in line with the current market. But considering what that buys you — one of the great V8s in MB history in a very attractive package — we think it’s quite the bargain.
