2010 Audi S5 Coupe with 6-speed Manual
Contents
For July 16, 2020, our used car find is this 55k mile 2010 Audi S5 coupe, which is listed on craigslist by a private seller in the Portland area for $19,490.
Here’s what makes this car special.
The Listing
The first generation S5 (chassis code B8) debuted for the 2008 model year (in the US), combining a powerful and sonorous V8 engine with a timelessly beautiful shape. At the time, Car and Driver said the big coupe “provides perhaps the most engaging experience since the original TT.”
This example checks all of the boxes — most importantly, it has the somewhat rare 6-speed manual gearbox, which allows you to wring out every ounce of sound and power from its potent (354 hp) 4.2 liter V8. It also has relatively low miles, an accident-free Pacific Northwest ownership history, and complete service records. Plus it looks quite stunning in its original Brilliant Black factory paint.
One must approach buying any used Audi with a bit of caution, and that is the case here. Of note, its direct-injection V8 is known for carbon buildup around the valves, which needs to be cleaned every 50k miles or so. Look for that service in the records for this car, and if it hasn’t been done, count on a roughly $1200 charge from a specialist.
The asking price here of $19,490 is a touch on the high side, but still within KBB’s range for one in this spec.
If you drive it and like it, we’d recommend using a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) as part the negotiation process. That way, if any issues turn up (like needing a carbon cleaning), you can factor that into the purchase price.
Assuming it checks out, you’d be getting one of the best-looking big coupes ever made, with a terrific powertrain, for less than twenty grand. That’s a pretty compelling buy.
