Contents
For July 4, 2020, our used car find is this 42k mile 2014 BMW 228i, which is listed on craigslist by a private seller in Beaverton, Oregon, for $16,500.
Here’s what makes this car special.
The Listing
Introduced in 2014, the 2 Series was essentially a second-generation 1 Series in coupe or convertible form, and it fixed one of the main issues with the 1 Series: the looks.
Though most attention goes to the more powerful M235i version, the “base” 228i offered here is no slouch in the performance department. Its 240 hp turbocharged four-cylinder is plenty potent for the small chassis, capable of 0-60 runs in the low five-second range. And the smaller engine means 200 fewer pounds over the front wheels (vs. the M235i), for better overall handling. At launch, Jalopnik called it “the best all-around BMW performance car for your dollar.”
This example is pretty much everything you’d want in a used 2 Series: relatively few miles, a great color (Estoril Blue), and nicely equipped, with the M Sport, Technology, and Premium packages.
One niggle could be the gearbox, since these are available with a 6-speed manual. However, the 8-speed ZF automatic present here is one of the best slushboxes out there and pairs very well with the N20 turbo engine.
The asking price of $16,500 is in line with KBB’s estimate for a 2 Series in this condition. Considering what it buys you, that is a pretty attractive option for an entertaining car under twenty grand.
