Final-year E90 BMW 335i with 6-speed Manual

For September 25, 2020, our used car find is this final-year E90 generation BMW 335i sedan with 69k miles and a 6-speed manual gearbox. It’s listed for sale on craigslist by a private seller in the Portland area for $14,000.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

The sixth-generation 3 Series, codename E90, debuted for the 2006 model year (in the US), ushering in the new Bangle-era of design. Its “flame-surfacing” creases and curves were a significant departure from the more conservatively styled E46 generation that it replaced. Reactions to the new look were polarized at the time, but we think today it holds up nicely.

Munich engineers made some notable changes over the E90’s production run, which ended with the 2011 model year. That included a major facelift for 2009, as well as the introduction of the potent N55 inline-six engine, which incorporates a twin-scroll turbocharger to produce 300 hp from a modest 3.0-liter displacement.

In a comparison test at the time, Car and Driver remarked, “BMW’s blown six streams its power in a silky, sateen torrent that cleaves through 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.”

The Listing

As a final-year E90, this car benefits from all of the upgrades made through the years. It’s also superbly specced, with options like the Sports and Cold Weather packages, plus a somewhat rare 6-speed manual gearbox. Also of note: this was the last year that BMW offered hydraulic steering in the 3 Series, which is what gave these cars their trademark reputation for outstanding steering feel.

We love the fact that this one is not equipped with the optional navigation screen, which otherwise spoils the beautifully simple dashboard. And while the bright Crimson Red factory paint may not be for everyone, we appreciate that it’s certainly not a boring color.

Other plusses for this two-owner example include an accident-free history, relatively low miles (69k), and a dealership service history dating back to 2015. The seller notes that an extra set of wheels shod with Blizzaks is included with the sale.

The asking price of $14,000 is a touch on the high side for similar E90s, according to KBB. But we wouldn’t let that dissuade anyone who is looking for a top-shelf example. Most private party sellers build in a little “cushion” to the price, anticipating some negotiation. We’d say something in the $12,500 neighborhood would be well bought.
