Super Clean Saaburu: 2006 Saab 9-2X Aero with 61k Miles

2006 Saab 9-2X Aero

For December 23, 2021, our used car find is this super clean and original 2006 Saab 9-2X Aero with just 61k miles. It’s offered on Craigslist by a private seller in the South Jersey area for $11,750 or best offer.

Here’s what makes this one special.

Introduction

If you’ve ever wanted the raw performance of a Subaru WRX with the sophistication of a European luxury car, we have good news. Towards the end of Saab’s lifetime, the Swedish automaker teamed up with Subaru to create the Saab 9-2X Aero. It was essentially a rebadged WRX — except that Saab (being Saab) made a number of subtle improvements to the car to elevate it to a more grown-up level. They include revised bodywork, a more upscale interior, and improved sound deadening.

Fortunately, they left the formidable WRX powertrain intact. That meant a 2.5-liter turbo flat-four under the hood, delivering 230 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels. While that may not sound like much power these days, it was good enough to launch the small wagon to 60 mph in six seconds flat. Plus, the 9-2X Aero kept all of the WRX’s suspension and steering upgrades, making it a hoot in the twisties. Car and Driver tested a 2005 model back in the day and came away calling it “a swanky WRX that’s better in every way.”

Unfortunately for Saab, new car buyers didn’t exactly embrace the upscale WRX. It cost thousands more than its Subie sibling while delivering basically the same level of performance. Sales lagged, and as a result the 9-2X Aero lasted only two years. That makes it a rare car.

The Listing

This particular example is one of the nicest we’ve seen in, well, ever. Boasting just 61k miles and a clean, unmodified appearance, it’s got to be one of the nicest Saabarus left in existence.

In the words of the seller…

One owner. The car drives and looks new.
This 92x model is a Saab branded Subaru WRX with the factory STI steering rack that handles the road incredibly. With the 2.5 turbo boxer engine it’s a fast car too.
No accidents, no smoking in car. Garaged all it’s life and the nice paint and plastics show!

Super rare car with low miles. This is 1 of 360 produced in 2006 ( these silver aero models). Collectible completely stock car!

A 85 year old woman drove it since new so as you could imagine the car drives like brand new. Very tight suspension and no noises.

Selling because we purchased a larger SUV. Sad to let it go.

The biggest downside here is the lack of a manual transmission. This car is fitted instead with the optional four-speed automatic. It’s not all bad news, though. In their 2006 Subaru WRX review, MotorTrend praised the “smooth-shifting four-speed autobox,” noting that it pairs nicely with the torquey 2.5-liter boxer engine.

Nice examples of the 9-2X Aero are few and far between, so it’s tough to nail down pricing. But we think $9500 is reasonable for one this good, even with the automatic gearbox. A manual-equipped car in similar shape would command a much higher price, as is evidenced by this recent Cars & Bids sale, which netted $13,000 despite having nearly twice the miles.

We’re betting this one doesn’t last long.
