1993 Mazda Miata (NA) with 28k Miles

For August 11, 2020, our used car find is this one-owner 1993 Mazda Miata with just 28k miles, which is listed for sale on Autotrader in the Portland area for $10,500.

Here’s what makes this car special.

Introduction

Introduced in 1989 (as a 1990 model), the first generation Miata (aka “NA”) was nothing short of revolutionary, emerging from the Malaise Era of overweight, underpowered cars like a reincarnation of Colin Chapman himself and showing the world that the appeal of a simple, lightweight roadster is nearly universal — especially when powered by a modern, reliable drivetrain.

In its first road test of the car, Car and Driver noted that “if the new Mazda MX-5 Miata were any more talented and tempting, buying one would be illegal.”

The Miata was of course a major success and has spawned three additional generations (NB, NC, and ND). Meanwhile, NA examples, which are mostly 25 years old or older, are starting to become collector’s items, with prices beginning to reflect that status.

The Listing

If you’re in the collecting mood, the specimen for sale here looks quite promising. It sports the Miata’s original 1.6 liter inline 4, good for 116 hp. One year later, the NA went to a slightly larger version, making about 10% more power, but purists tend to prefer the original mill. And with just 2220 lbs to move, it’s plenty peppy, especially with Mazda’s always-delightful 5-speed manual gearbox. Sprints to 60 mph clock in around 9 seconds.

This is also a rare one-owner car which looks to be in all-original condition. With not even 30k miles showing, its appearance inside and out is like new. Classic Red is a fairly common Miata color, but it’s easy to see why. It add a bit of punch to the car’s clean lines, which helped to make it the color of choice for most reviews and ads back when the Miata debuted.

With good NA examples available for as little as five grand, the asking price here of $10,500 may seem high. However, demand for original, low-mile examples is quite strong, and similar cars fetch this amount and more on Bring a Trailer.

For someone who wants one of the nicest early Miatas out there, we think it’s a pretty good buy.
